When 6B Digital won ‘New Business of the Year 2015’ in the Wakefield Business Awards, the FdA Web Design course couldn’t resist basking in a little reflected glory. Two of its students – Ruby Glover and Dominic Walker – had joined 6B Digital within months of it starting up, and whilst still studying on the course, helped to build its growing reputation.
FdA Web Design Programme Leader, Steve Smith, recalled the flurry of emails that resulted in his first meeting with 6B Digital Founder and Director, Paul Brown, and which led to Ruby being offered her first job in the Creative & Digital Industries:
Ruby was a very talented student, working her way through the course by waitressing at a local hotel where she was clearly under-valued. When Paul got in touch, looking for new employees to help him grow 6B Digital, the match seemed too good to be true. I don’t think it took him long to recognise her talent, and I don’t think it took Ruby long to wave goodbye to the Hospitality industry!
Ruby reflected on her time on the course and her transition to employment:
FdA Web Design took me from a novice to an industry professional in just two years. Not only did I learn the techniques and knowledge required in the Creative & Digital Industries, I also gained valuable and practical employability skills which made my transition to 6B Digital an easy one.
The course really provided a fundamental stepping stone in progressing my career from student to employee. The training and understanding I attained have allowed me to move up quickly in the company. I’m now responsible for a variety of projects and clients, something that wouldn’t have been possible without the experience I gained during our commercial work in the second year of the course.
FdA Web Design really provided me with the opportunity to move forward and pursue the path I aspired to, and 6B Digital has continued to open up chances to progress even further.
Dominic Walker soon followed Ruby to 6B Digital. He was then a first year student, after progressing to FdA Web Design internally from the College’s Level 3 Extended Diploma in Graphic Design.
Over the two years of the course I not only picked up a variety of industry skills, but I also developed my levels of communication and self presentation. By experiencing a variety of employment scenarios I was able to prepare myself for the industry. I developed the confidence to challenge myself as an individual looking for employment, and the last year at 6B Digital has allowed me to build on my practical and business skills whilst developing alongside a team of budding young digital enthusiasts.
In only 14 months 6B Digital have grown to employ eight people and have plans to recruit more, whilst being committed to developing young digital talent from the local community. They specialise in website creation, design and print solutions, bespoke web applications, and client databases.
Kate Livesey, Paul’s fellow Director, recognised the qualities of the course:
FdA Web Design provides students with all the skills needed to join a digital team. The course instills a great work ethic that can only be passed on by passionate teaching. Unlike many other courses, FdA Web Design really stands out by working closely with local businesses. Thanks to this, students have a really good chance of getting employed within the industry at the end of their course.
We are very grateful for our relationship with the University Centre. We have been fortunate to employ two graduates, both of whom have proven to be invaluable members of the team, and who were instantly key components in the operation of the business. We are looking forward to our continued relationship with the course.
